BIG PICTURE

NEXGEN MgO Fire Resistance

Every 23 seconds, a fire department in the United States responds to a fire somewhere in the nation. A fire occurs in a structure at the rate of one every 64 seconds, and a home fire occurs every 89 seconds. These fires result in more than $20 billion in property damage and the risk to thousands of lives. It is reported that the time to escape a burning home is less than 3 minutes. This puts those you love in harm’s way.

Use MgO based building products to significantly increase the fire ratings of residential and commercial buildings

AMAZING FEATURES

Key Fire Resistance Facts

Non-Combustible Material

Made of magnesium oxide and other minerals, MAXTERRA MgO panels are non-combustible and provide zero flame spread and zero smoke spread. Ideal in wall sheathing, subflooring, and roof deck applications.

Fire Protection Without Added Chemicals

Unlike other fire-resistant building materials, MAXTERRA panels do not require added chemicals to achieve their fire-resistant properties. This means they will not produce toxic fumes or smoke when exposed to high heat or flames.

Build 1- and 2-Hour Fire Rated Assemblies

NEXGEN MgO panels have an E84 Class A highest rating for fire resistance. They have been rigorously tested and proven to withstand fire for longer periods of time than traditional building materials like plywood, OSB and gypsum board.

CASE STUDY SUMMARY

SITUATION

Building homes in fire zones demands usinthe use of  building materials that are fire resistant, do not burn, or combust.

SOLUTION

NEXGEN MgO based panels and boards are used for internal and external sheathing, floor underlayment and roof underlayment

IMPACT

Homes in built-in fire zones can now withstand home fire damage from accidents and disasters.

What does fire resistance mean?

Fire resistant materials are designed to prevent the spread of fire and withstand heat. When a source of ignition is removed, fire resistant material like NEXGEN MgO boards self-extinguish.  Note that fire resistant and fire proof are used to describe the same behavior. Technically they are interchangeable.

Why are fire ratings important?

A fire rating is given to an assembly composed of various building materials constructed to resist the exposure of a standardized fire exposure for a certain period of time.  Fire ratings can be applied to a wall, floor, or roof system. A fire test follows a standard procedure that specifies the rate at which the test system temperature is increased over the duration of the test. Some of the key fire test acceptance criteria stipulate that the fire from the gas-fired test system cannot penetrate through the assembly during the test.

What are the four fire-resistance rated wall assembly types?

The four types of fire resistance rated wall assemblies are:

Fire Barriers - are designed to restrict the spread of fire across the assembly and can have a one to four-hour fire-resistance rating.

Fire Walls - are the most robust and restrictive of the four wall types. Hourly rating requirements for fire walls range from 2 to 4 hours.

Fire Partitions - are the least restrictive assembly and are used for corridor wall construction and as tenant separations in retail and residential buildings.

Smoke Barriers - are assemblies that are intended to restrict the movement of smoke across the barrier and have a 1-hour fire rating.
